Not sure then, From memory I removed the screw in adapter from the carbs and then basically screwed this in to the rubber manifiols as far as it would go, so effectively using the adapter thread as secondary holding and tightened the hose clamps to the stops.
I then screwed the adapters back in to the carbs and fitted the carbs to the inlets, again screwing the hose clamps to the stops, without any problems. Then braced them.
I can send you photos if it helps? Are you missing the adapters possibly?
