When I replaced the whole left side control unit I wasn't too concerned about damage so I took a flat-head driver to it and it eventually popped out. Unfortunatly, I don't recall what the mechanism was (there was one as the new plug snapped in nicely) but I can take a look at the one that I yanked off when I get home.
