I agree with previous comments about the Fosse excelant road,used it many times myself.

I live in Edinburgh but hail from Durham. That's the route I take to get down to visit my family. You could also jump on the A7 and use that to get to Edinburgh via St Marys Loch if you're after a detour!
Watch out for mobile cameras (and fixed) on the A68, mostly the Scottish side of the border for fixed but I've seen mobiles on both sides.
