Unfortunately, I didn't do the conversion. The previous owners (only two) did. I was even thinking of switching back to a 525 since it's so hard to find steel 520 sprockets. At least for me, I might be slightly retarded. However i've found a lot of 520 conversion kits, but that's again only supplies you with Alloy sprockets.
I hear you BBD, grave shift is great for riding. I get off in the morning at 7am also, when it's nice and crisp out and all the traffic is going the opposite direction. Working 4x10s is great too since I get three days to ride (when my bike is up, that is). And most of the motogurus here at work have at least one day off with me, so we're planning some 500+ mile trips. A couple of us are going to try and ride up to Canada and back in two days. Should be a great trip from Portland, OR.
Anyways, sorry i'm no help with the conversion question. Do you think switching back to a 525 is a bad idea? As far as i've been informed the only reason to convert to a 520 is weight saving. Is that correct?
