Yup a disc lock is your best bet for short term or low risk parking. At home, or in higher risk situations, you really want to attach the bike to something. Two guys with 2x4's can pick up and bike and put it into a van or truck amazingly quickly though. I have an On-Gaurd 'Noose' style chain that works great. OnGaurd and Kryptonite are the two name brands I know of.

Locks aren't cheap, and if you go with one of those two brands, the more you spend, the better protection you get. Also worth considering, especially if you're only using a disc lock, is where you park your bike. Some of my friends try to hide their bikes when they park, but my strategy is to put it front and center, where people will notice if someone tries to rip it off. At home I keep it in the garage and covered up, and never work on where I'm visible from the street. Parking somewhere inconvenient for a truck to get at is also good - the more difficult it is to carry the bike away the better.
