I bought my first modern Triumph in 1999. It was a candy red Sprint. I bought it at Donnelsons in St. Louis.

When I went there in August of 1996, I was determined to buy a new Triumph. The showroom had the new 955 models up front. Towards the rear were three Trophy sport/touring bikes.

One of the Trophys was a dark blue with a 900 engine. I sat on the bike. It had a good feel. The price was about $11,500 for it.

I got off the Trophy and went back to the front of the shop. Again, I found myself looking at a 1999 red Sprint 955. The bars were really low and I did not trust the injection back then, so back to the Trophy.

When I got to the three Trophys, I think someone had slipped in another motorcycle. It was a candy red Sprint. 1996 model. It was brand new for only $8500. Since I owned a 1968 candy red (Grenidere red) Bonneville, I fell in love with this Sprint.

I asked if the bike was new or used? Mr. Donnelson said it was new. Why had it set for 3 years? He could not figure it out either. Maybe it was the candy red color?

Half an hour later, the bike was loaded in my van for the trip back to Arkansas. Over the next few years, I put 60,000 flawless miles on the bike.

I then sold the bike to an engineer buddy of mine in Arizona. Then, I retired back to Arkansas. Since then, my buddy has said he also wants to retire to Arkansas and ride around all these great mountain roads with me............
