The fuel sender is an occasional failure item. Unfortunately, it's in the tank so the tank needs to be removed and the plate on the right side taken off. On the bright side of things, if it failed completely, the engine warning light would also come on, so at least that hasn't happened.

If you do wind up replacing the sender unit, you should also replace the fuel filter (if you haven't yet).
