I don't want to scare you or cause you unnecessary work but that IMO is an exit wound. Unless there was an existing flaw in the casting it would not be damaged like that by a flying object impacting at an oblique angle. That the hole is small inside and uniformly larger on the outside surface says to me the inside of the case took a blow and knocked the chunk out.
I would be very concerned that, for example, you'd lost one camshaft sprocket bolt. It could also be that the camchain picked up something and threw it at the cover. IIWY I wouldn't run the engine until I'd had the cover off to check for missing parts and dropped the sump (if that's possible) to check for bits that shouldn't be there.
