Yeah something like that could probably be made to work. The thing about the tool, its very short, so it fits on the chainwheel with the chain in place. Then, the laser is precisly aligned with the edge of your chain, so all you have to do is sight along it. If you want to save money a mechanical version is availablbe for about 25 bucks, but the laser is so fast and handy its worth it to me
