...paint thinner (mineral spirits). WOW, talk about a shine.
I was having a bit of a tough time getting some brake dust off the rear wheel of my SM. Pulled out the paint thinner, since it is great for removing tar, grease, etc. You can now add brake dust to that list. Not only did the brake dust easily wipe away, but the shine that the paint thinner left behind was blinding in the sun. So I used another cloth heavily dampened with paint thinner, wiped both sides of the wheel, then rinsed off with water, and polished dry with an old towel. It looks better than new, and there was no deterioration to the coating on the aluminum.
