Personally, for casual around-town riding, I'm a big fan of Carhartt double-knee work pants:


If you want added protection or are going for a longer ride, add Icon's knee/shin armor:


The Icon armor is terrific -- very comfortable, and it's pretty unobtrusive with pants over it.

Also, the Carhartt double-knee pants are very tough. I took a spill last autumn, went down in part on my left knee, and slid, and the pants didn't even wear through the outer layer of canvas.
