I did a replacement over the winter... I'd really rather not say why my abusive riding technique brought this about. Uh... I didn't mean to say that. Dang!
Anyway. No you do not need the centering tool. It may be needed on 2001's but I'm sure its not need on a 2004. The 'Pushrod Seat' serves the funtion of a centering tool. The requirement is to tighten down the four bolts that secure the release plate evenly so that when they are tighten all the way the pushrod seat moves in and out smoothing and unrestricted. This took me, like, 10 tries. Very frustrating but crystal clear once it happened.
There are alot more plates (total, er,,.. 13 or 14?) than the manual shows (5). Its a repeating pattern. So don't be surprised when the parts guy start wipping out a stack of plates. Inspect them before purchase. I had to exhange one that was warped.
This requires dumping the oil - even then, be prepared for a messy job that requires absolute cleanliness (don't want even a bit of grit on the plates) A click type torque wrench is a practical essential. You'll probalby want to replace the clutch cable also, once you see it, I bet.
PS when it comes time to do the valve adjust, you can avoid the triump tool there too.
Any questions just ask but please remember, before I did this, I couldn't SPELL clutch - and the job turned out fine.
