I'm a fan of the FirstGear pants for commuting - I have a set of the HT II textiles for cool weather and HT Air mesh for warm weather. The textiles are pretty much waterproof (a little leakage in real downpours), and the Airs have a zip-in waterproof liner that I've spent all day riding in the rain and stayed dry.

They're pretty well thought out pants all the way around, not too expensive, and come in tall and short sizes. If you're planning on mostly wearing them over a pair of paints, order your waist size. If you'll be wearing them alone, get the next size down.

A suggestion - knees are complicated devices best left undisturbed - at a minimum upgrade to the CE armor. My preference is the knee pads that from dragginjeans.com that are so nice I use them in all my riding pants. They're made by Knox, and without a doubt saved my a trip to the hospital and a lot of pain in a crash last year. :hammer:
