IIRC, they started putting stainless lines on US bikes in '96. I vaguely recall hearing somewhere that it was due to DoT regs. Supposedly, ss lines were not street-legal in the US until '96.

I don't think new lines will feel any different from your current lines. The Teflon inner hose in stainless lines simply doesn't expand with age (or pressure!) the way rubber does. (The Teflon is actually the point of these lines; the stainless braid is only there to protect the Teflon from cuts/punctures/abrasions/etc.)
