Checking the valve clearance is pretty easy, I just did it for the first time on my Busa @ 28,000 miles and only two valves were near the tight end of tolerance. Adjusting the valves isn't even that hard if you're not afraid of pulling the cams out. If the thought of doing that scares you, it'd probably best be left to a shop, otherwise anyone with a basic set of tools can do it themselves.
