There are a number of threads and IMHO (having tried it) it is quite labour intensive and you need patience, lots of kit (flapper type buffers/sanding wheels & buffing compounds) as well as gaskets and oil seals.. Is it worth it? Definitely - see my album for results.
I tried chroming first and would advise against chroming aluminium.
