Preloading the transmission; generally for upshifting, the practice of using just slightly less force on the shift lever than needed to engage in the next gear and then rolling off the throttle about 25% ,engaging the clutch while following through with the actual gear changing procedure.

Lots of folks use this technique to shift smoothly or to compensate for transmissions that tend to be notchy, have long shilft lever travel or that are generally a tad imprecise to shift in general.

When you are comfortable with it, most people use that technique for clutch-less upshifting, generally while traveling at or near full throttle; preload the lever while haulin' a@@, instantaneaously roll off the throttle; the momentary transmission unloading wil allow you to quick upshift without employing the clutch lever at all, then you roll back on with the throttle. Upshift only mind you.

Remember, when preloading do not use enough force to actually pull the transmission out of gear and the clutch-less shifting is not a technique to employ while downshifting or while cruising, it highly dependant on you accelerating to some degree as when you finally 'roll off' the throttle momentarily, this fascilitates the transmission "unloading" that allows you to snick the lever quickly and smoothly into the next gear.
