Look at the air/fuel maps. Below are links to the 06 and 07 Air/Fuel maps. Notice that much of the 06 and earlier tables are above redline and below idle. The 07+ tables are revised to add more RPM points around cruise.
It's almost as if a generic ECU were quickly pasted onto the 05/06 bikes.
The 07 ECU on the other hand appears to be optimized for the Sprint RPM range.

Contrary to other postings here the 07 tunes will not load into an earlier ECU
You may need to expand or enlarge the jpegs for a good view but detail is there.

Notice the raised or lean area around idle and cruise. I believe this accounts for much of the improved starting and MPG. The 05/06 machines gas foul unless you blip the throttle to give them more air.
