I'm proposing to change the rubber knee pads on the tank of my TB for a set of the thicker, more sculpured version used on the Adventurer. The existing set have been on the bike from new, but have always left black marks, particularly noticable on my armoured blue jeans, and now have a very 'flat', almost greyish, look to them in places.

Is there a tried and tested method of removing them (and any residual adhesive) without risking damage to the paintwork?
