Hi Paul, I also have the offroad can. I picked up the 04 tiger used with 1100 miles on it. The guy that owned it before me had the rear gear changed and the can added. Unfortunately he was to short for the bike and dropped it a couple of time(minor scratches), I picked it up for 8000, was a steal I could not pass.
As for replacing the K&N lets see if I can remember the steps.
1. Remove side leg covers from tank
2. remove air vent from front fairing
3. Remove Battery and battery housing
4. Unbolt front and rear of gas tank
5. Gently raise tank. More on the rear than the front. I got the back of the tank to sit on the cross strut where the battery was. I raised it to the point where I could lay a 2X4 (on the flat side)block under the rear to get it high enough to get my hands under the tank.
6. Unscrew the four screws that hold the airfilter in
7. Raise filter holder and remove existing filter
8. Install new k&n filter( K&N part # TB-9097)
Reinstall all parts in the same sequence you removed. Total time it took me was about 45 mins, but it was my first time and was not sure of what I was doiing. There was one connection that came off during the process. looking at the handle bars from the rear( on the left side of the bike right next to the back of the tank there was a white connector that came un done, I recoinnected before I mounter the side leg peices.
Good luck, from the seat I would say the low end torque is very noticable.
