According to the workshop manual your clutch cable free play should be 2-3mm at the lever (don't know how that compares with a "dimes worth"!). I would agree with what Geoff said, particularly if you're using an automotive oil with friction modifiers that don't agree with the wet clutch. The clutches on these bikes seem to be pretty robust so you would have had to have gone some to wear out the clutch on an 05 bike, unless you've put a turbo on it!
