Just a few lines to say thank you for the advice that has been offered.
A closer look at the hose showed that it was not as bad as I first thought - it was just the ends that were badly split. As it was just a simple rubber hose and quite a generous length I simply cut the ends and refitted it.
Sure enough there was a nipple on the bottom of the airbox and I've now connected the hose up to it - thanks for that info.
