I have always used a top box and a tank bag instead of paniers when touring or going on over night rides. My preference due to the ease of taking then off when out for a fang with my mates and no unsightly brackets.

Fitted a Givi Monokey top box (takes 2 full face helmets) to my previous Sprint (2001) by mounting the adapter plate to the Triumph rack (simple things to do just bolt on)

Got a Triumph top box (takes 2 full face helmets) on my current Sprint (2004). Choose the Triumph for the colour match.

The look of your bike is a personal thing, what others think I don't care as long as I have the convienience I need. A top box changing the ride I very much doubt that, it is not a lot weight and a lot lower than when you have a pillion on board. The maximum recommended weight for both Givi or Triumph is 25kg. Most pillions would be annorexic with they weighed that.

You could argue with paniers if you don't keep the weight balanced that would change the ride.
