Yes, the sun is a problem. I zero my trip meter at each fill up. When I get to 280kms, I fill up, whether the fuel warning light is on or not. Much safer, I hate pushing :-D

I've had the cluster off my 99 S3 to replace some bulbs. No point in getting anything too much brighter. I think the originals were 1.5 watt, I put 3 watt in because that was all I could get locally.

LEDs may well work, if there is no more heat than that of a 3 watt standard bulb. On other makes I've seen the bulb housing and plastics melt away because the globe was too strong and got too hot.
