Hi shootist,
I can't give you a comparison to other exhaust pipes since I have not heard them. Although most of the aftermarket pipes I have heard are loud. My modified stock pipe sounds deeper and more throaty than normal. My kids tell me it sounds like a different bike, a sport bike.
When I start it it sounds normal and you have to listen for the difference. It has a deeper tone coming out of the background. I have no pops so deceleration sounds clean. You really hear the difference when you goose the throttle it is louder, deeper toned and has a much more pronounced growl.
I took her out for a good ride yesterday and boy does it breath better. 1000 to 9500 RPM happens quicker, much quicker and much more responsively. At one time I was thinking of dropping to 18 teeth in my front sprocket and now I am not sure I need to.
I generally ride with ear plugs and could hear the louder growl, just a bit, through the plugs. I also rode for a bit in the afternoon without the plugs and I liked hearing the deeper, richer sound. I am thinking the aftermarket pipes are louder since the ones I hear when I ride with others are. I was even thinking about getting a new can. But now I have a little more sound and speed.
I did listen after drilling the first hole and did not hear much difference. Even after the second hole the sound is not too much louder. It does not sound loud like a Harley or even loud like what anyone would consider loud. The neighbors don't notice a difference.
I can hear the louder sound when I lay into the throttle but by the time anyone reacts I'm gone.
