Hey Lad,
I've been in the Auto Body and Paint business for over 20 years, and from what I can tell our tanks are steel. Here's a couple of tips if you're planning on stripping that tank of yours for polishing. (1) make ***** sure your tank has no filler in it.Often times if a tank or auto body part is dinged at the factory ,the manufacturer will do a small repair to the metal before finishing(this is a common practice).(2)Use only a chemical stripper to remove paint.Sanders leave marks that are very hard to remove with a buffer.(3)Make sure you prep the surface after polishing with an automotive metal prep solution before you spray your clear coating. This will neutralise any airbourne moisture that may settle on the bare steel.(4)This is a bad idea!! Polishing is much better on aluminium.Maybe you should inquire into having it chromed instead. Just my opinion.
