When I first got my 02 - the book said it had a sight glass - sure enough it was not there - turns out they gave me an 01 book with my 02 bike..
Coming from a BMW background that had the sight glass, I always found that an easier option - but you get used to the screwing out, wiping, screwing in routine pretty well.
Fortunately, mine hardly uses any oil - but I still check about once a week.
