The sight glass was on the -'01 model years and was discontinued for the '02+ so you need to use the dipstick. I thought the sight glass was more convenient to use as long as you had a center stand.
The manual says measurement is made with the bike straight up (not on the side stand) and by screwing the dipstick all the way in. It recommends waiting 10 minutes after shutdown to let the oil drain. It's silent on whether to use the center stand. My experience is that the center stand does not affect the results.
