Finally fittd the (modified) home-made stems and bungs. They look absolutely spiffing and are EVEN with the bobbins protruding exactly the same amount from the tank. To do this, we had to make the left and right stems different lengths.
I met another 06 owner who had fitted the R&G bungs and he explained to me that the stems themselves acted as the nuts for the engine mounting bolts. The bungs we made do not mount by this method - A stainless steel M12 mounting bolt is used, facing outwards, then a nut is torqued on in the usual fashion except for being on the outside. The bolts were made with about 30mm of thread protruding beyond the nut onto which the stems are fitted, with the base of the stem being hollowed out to allow it to seat squarely on the frame, encapsulating the nut within. The stems can therefore be removed at any time without disturbing the engine mountings.
We used aluminium for the stems. No doubt there are many views on the suitability of various materials and how 'bungs' should work but these look the dogs testicles. I don't particularly relish the idea of reporting on how well they work!
