You mean "less" friction.'' I think the idea with nylon is it gives a nice big impact area that doesn't grab and absorbs the forces better. Steel won't absorb any energy and will transfer all the force to your frame, increasing the chance of something bending or breaking. It will more likely penetrate/grab the pavement also.

Aluminium would be a little better than steel.
