By crank case cover, do you mean the small one about 3 inches in diameter? or the large one that's about 6" x 10" and covers most of the side? I don't recall if the '01 has the small cover (specifically for checking the crank TDC location).
I've got the small one off and will try tomorrow to poke around in there without getting my fingers caught.
