I had mine off just last week so let's see if I can paint a picture for you. If you remove the chrome strips on each side of the bike over the rear tire. Beneath the chrome you will find 4 capscrews which hold the rear fender in place, larger ones forward, smaller ones at rear. Also, there are additional "clearance" holes with which you pass 2 more capscrews (per side, and I would guess come with the sissy bar and brackets) to hold on the "L" shaped chromed brackets, left & right side specific. Then the small luggage rack & sissy bar back rest attach to these two brackets by means of 4 more longer capscrews which pass thru each component & the "L" brackets.
In my experience, an extra pair of hands would be helpful with all these brackets cause it would appear that whoever installed my (I got my bike second hand) slipped & dinked the rear fender enough to remove the paint in a spot and then did a poor job of matching with touch-up paint.
The extra set of hands is really recommended but you could probably accomplish it solo.

ps. when you remove the chrome strips at the first of the process, you will find the black rubber edging along the top of the brackets will not cooperate during re-installation of these strips at the end of the operation. If you figure out a good way to make them stay in place on the strips, let me know. They are a pain in the bu**.
