Hi,
I bought my 02 sprint in the fall of 05. The previous owner said he'd used only synthetic oil and the bike only had 6500 KM on it. I took it to the nearest authorized dealer in Kingston, Ontario for an oil change and he was disgusted with the condition of the oil, and they checked the VIN number against the Triumph database and found none of the recall work had been done. Basically, it became clear that the previous owner was more careful about keeping the thing washed and looking pretty than doing anything more than bare maintenance. I took it back to the Kingston dealer and he gave it a complete look over. He flushed the coolant, replaced the brake fluid, replaced the front fork oil, checked the valves, and retuned the carbon silencer can (the settings were out of date). The recall work was coverd by Triumph.

I lean on the side of caution. I probably could have gone away waiting longer to do the valves because it turned out he didn't have to adjust them. But all the other stuff was needed and so in the end I paid around $1100 Cdn for the work. I initially thought I was getting a pretty good deal when I bought the bike and the previous owner accepted $500 less on is asking price because I had to have new tires put on. If I'd known I was going to do all the routine maintenance work I would have perhaps tried to barter better.
