OK here is my advice on cleaning chrome:
1. Use a warm bucket of water add a car detergent (not washing up liquid!) and soap the area you are cleaning.
2. Wipe off the smears then when dry use Tcut metal polish.
3. If the metal is pitted use some hard rubbing to take out the pitting (it will require some time with plenty of elbow grease or effort).
4. Then apply a 2nd coat and use another clean cloth to polish out.
I would guess that everyone has their views. I live on the south coast of the UK and we have our fair share of wet damp weather and salt air. My Bonneville is generally very good but did have some slight pitting on the covers, which I've managed to get rid of almost completely with the above solution.
If you are a chrome fiend Autosol is also good but a little more expensive (in the UK at least).
Casper
