I had the same problem with two new Amals on a '69 Bonnie. Turns out that the combination of trimming the gasket along with making sure that the float bowls are not UNDERSIZED fixed it. The float was hanging up on the gasket where the undersized bowl pushed it into an interference fit.

Easy to fix, once I figured out the issue.
