At work, so no books with me, but I'll have a stab...

Light switch positions would normally be OFF(left)-PARKING LIGHTS(middle), HEADLIGHTS+PARKING LIGHTS(right). By parking lights, I mean the small 5W globe in the headlight shell, the gauge lights (3W),and the 5W filament of the rear light.

Depends on how your bike is wired, some may require the ignition switch to be on to provide power to the lights, some may be straight from the Battery/Fuse. One way, your headlight goes off when you turn the ignition off (battery saver), the other takes the load off the ignition switch, but can lead to forgetful types being caught out with a bat flattery.
