At least that's my theory. Usual suspect is overfilling with oil during an oil change. I did my oil change at 4000 miles and rode for a week, mostly commuting. Did some after work rides in the country at a brisk pace for about 45 minutes.
Last weekend was a fairly long ride at a lively pace. About 180 miles into the trip oil began pouring from the airbox after a shutdown. About .25qt poured onto the ground. Initially I thought I'd overfilled, but I was careful during the oil change. Even planned it where I filled the night before, then checked the level the next morning, and again that night after running around during the day.
Each time the level was just a bit into the bottom of the site glass. I even went so far as to put a level on the tank to make sure I was close to upright when measuring.
At the stop, I cleaned the surplus oil, drained/wiped the filter as best I could, and added about .25qt back. I know, this might just make it happen again, but it was a logical decision. About 45 minutes later the bike began running poorly over 4k rpm, so figured the filter was saturated. At the next fuel stop, more oil drips out and I pulled the filter. If it were foam instead of paper, I'd have cleaned and re-installed. But since it wasn't, tossed the filter and kept the rpms low to keep from running too lean. This time I added oil, but kept it just at the bottom of the site glass, thinking the crank breather may have slipped down.
The bike ran fine the rest of the way home, and back at the house, more oil in the breather. Again, cleaned it up and limped it to the dealer the next day.
It's in the shop now. Once they have the resolution, I'll post the results.
