Hmm, I've not noticed any problems like this at all with my '04 (now 2200 miles on the clock). I've never had a false neutral and the only notchiness at all is between 1-2 and it's completely acceptable. These symptoms sound a bit like the clutch is not fully disengaging. Try adjusting the lever (out).
