There are wrenches for doing that. I don't have one, unfortunately. You unload the rear of the bike by hanging it from the garage rafters (if you are me) or some other way (if you are more sane or more creative) and loosen the bottom ring. Then you crank the preload up as much as you want then retighten the bottom ring good and tight so it doesn't back off again. I have used a long screwdriver and a hammer to tap the rings to tighten and loosen them without jacking up the bike, but that is not exactly the recommended method, and I haven't tried it on a Triumph.
