Thanks for the info guys. I want to stay away from the vehicle specific gps models because I also plan on using it when I travel (almost got lost on a trek into the mountains north of Puerto Vallarta last year because of a lack of maps available in mexico) and when I hike in the backcountry ( I only live a few hours from the Rocky Mountains). One of my concerns was how much mapping info is held in XX Megabytes. Sounds like the Garmin 60CS may be too small, and at 115MB the 76CS would likely be enough but it is $130 more than an equivalently equipped Magellan eXplorist 600 which uses an SD card. I have had the same 120 songs on my iPOD shuffle for the last 6mo. so I may be too lazy to reload a gps with a limited memory.
The other big question was whose maps are better? I could find no definative data on the web. Both respective manufacturers' websites stated that the license for the mapping software was good for one gps or one sd card but is there anything that would stop me from finding someone who has a map software I want and just copying it onto my gps or sd card?
