I was using TBS needles for a while too, and i also had them shimmed to the hilt. The reason is that they are longer than the stock needles but tapered more. So if you don't shim them the diameter of the needle at any given point in the jet is actually thicker than stock needles because they are so long, even tho they are tapered more. So shimming them with about 3 shims leave you with the same length as the stock ones but a thinner taper so you get richer than stock. otherwise you actually go backwards because of the length and it gets leaner instead of richer. i then went to thrux needles which are about the same length as stock but even more tapered than either those or the TBS. So with no shims they are almost like the TBS with 3 shims but a bit more tapered and a bit richer.
