I have no center stand on 06 America. I have no jack or lift.
If it had a center stand can the rear be pivoted down, held down or something to allow the front to be lifted to allow for removal of front wheel or work on shocks, etc. if need be?
I had a center stand on me old cb650, and I still needed a jack for tyre/wheel removal ! Thus I built a simple tube lift for bike. WhenI got speedster, lift still worked, but bought a harbor frieght lift for a more stable platform while removing tyres, etc.
Center stands cost much more than the Harbor Freight lift (presently about $85 vs $350).
The lift is much more useful for maintenance (eg oil/filter change etc) and storing/moving the bike with both wheels off the ground.
And a lift takes up a hell of a lot more room strapped to the back of your bike when you're out riding than a correctly manufactured and fitted aftermarket centre stand. I haven't read of many SM or BA riders complaining about their centre stands though. Horses for courses I suppose? I fitted a second hand Rivco stand to my 06 BA when I first got it and haven't looked back since.
On my Rivco the only thing to make contact is the loop under the left exhaust. It has only happened to me a couple of times on a crowned road while making a low-speed, tight left turn.
Kinda hard to pack a floor jack when you are traveling any distance, I got one just to lube the cahin and any unforseen tire problems away from the house.
I appreciate all the responses.... I really sincerely do. I think BTHUMPER answered my question. "You can rock the bike back on a center stand to allow front end work."
Johnquinnel you win the funny answer award.
I modified a spare center stand from my Yamaha and it works just fine. The back wheel is 1" of the floor. I put a bottle jack or floor jack under the front and raise it till the rear wheel touches down, then i can work on the front. I do this after i have rolled it onto my four poster car lift so i don't even have to kneel on the floor. Just press a button and raise the lift to whatever height i want.:jiggy
I got my centerstand from ebay for $125 and installation was easy. Picking the bike up on the stand is another issue. If I pull into my garage I can get it on the centerstand but if I back- in I can't. Well I think I better start going to the gym 55 years old and a 500 lb America the america wins almost every time. Anyone have a easy way to get the bike on the centerstand? I have a jack also that I really like
If you park with back wheel on a flat peice of wood say 25mm (1") thick , then when you try to pull back bike onto centerstand you are already that little bit higher = it really makes a difference.
I used a Center stand on my Speedmaster for all of two weeks, I couldn't live with it, for me it was just to low, sold it and bought a service stand from local Triumph dealer which allowed me to clean the wheels etc. service stand was cheaper than the Center stand?
