When I bought my 72 Trident used, the speedo didn't work at all. When I removed the speedo gearbox and opened it up, I found that the metal nubs that catch the cable gear were completely worn down. After replacing the ring with a new used one with nubs, the speedometer works. The only problem is that the needle reads 80 when I'm doing 55mph and the odometer rolls faster. There are different gear ratios to take into consideration when replacing part of or all of the speedo gearbox. I guess it all depends on the year, make and speedometer.
I never corrected it for two reasons: 1) It's a pain to take the rear wheel off to get to the box. 2) Who looks at the speedometer anyway? Concentrate on your tach!!
