from all the reading i've done here, the weak links seem to be: 1) fuel system, like the petcock, fuel lines squeezed by airbox, or the gas cap is creating vacuum lock. carbs or filters could be gunked up, though from personal experience I know the 1200 will run even with the filters and carb jets/needles severely gunked up; 2) ignition coil(s) going out.

On any bike that old with the expected miles, if no one has previously rebuild them, the stock carbs typically have problems and need to be rebuilt. Replace all the rubber bits and gaskets, and the jets/needles/emulsion tubes. Normally it's a slow insidious deterioration...
