related anecdote: My cable finally broke at around 45k miles/5 years. After replacing it I noticed the error factor went up noticably. I figure this was due to the old one slowly deteriorating and the new cable bringing the speedo back up to 'factory' margin of error.
ps I checked speedo against my GPS before/after.
