I've heard brake cleaner is good. Gets rid of all of the crud. Is safe with the rubber and evaporates away.
I can vouch that WD40 ruined my fork seals on an old bike. I thought it would keep the front end moving nicely if I coated the forks with WD40 on a regular basis. I was going through fork seals every 6 months before I was told about WD40 and rubber.
