Don't laugh... modern safety glasses (in the Twin Cities you can get them at Menards, Fleet Farm, Northern Equipment, Home Depot, etc.) cost less than $10 a pair, come in a variety of styles and tints, and protect the eyes pretty well, since that's what they're designed to do.
Some of the styles are quite similar to "motorcycle" glasses sold at bike shops for two or three times as much. I like the yellow lenses because they cut glare and give good, sharp, contrast day or night. You can ride 24 hours a day with the same glasses.
