It's instinct. You do not want to hit anything. I avoid things without even thinking about it. You think "If I hit it, I could lose it" so you avoid. I did the same with a jack rabbit on my VFR. I was in a turn, saw it, avoided it, ran on the shoulder lost it at 10mph....
Get her back on the road soon.
