January '03 Performance Bikes magazine (UK mag) has a "Set-Up" column. I ran across this old issue and thought you all might find it interesting...for whatever its worth. They used a '02 TT600 but I'm sure this applies to other TT's and S4's.
stock settings:
rear-
preload: 37mm threads showing above lock ring
rebound: 1.5 turns out from full in
compression: 1.5 turns out from full in
front-
preload: 5 lines showing
rebound: 1.5 turns out from full in
compression: 1.5 turns out from full in
PB Road settings:
rear-
preload: 44mm threads showing above lock ring
rebound: 0.75 turns out from full in
compression: 0.5 turns out from full in
front-
preload: 3 lines showing
rebound: 0.5 turns out from full in

tire pressure: 36 ft, 42 rr
PB Track settings:

The article discusses how to change the settings and what they did to test the settings including their impressions of various other changes (they suggest not raisingthe fork tubes in yokes, for example).
Generally article mentions the stock settings/suspension is quite good (you all know that already) and only needed minor tweaking to get the most out of it.

"The settings are for an "average" rider who weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 170 lbs. I discovered that the stock preloads were perfect for me, but that I had to add two clicks of both compression and rebound to suit the speeds that I go on track days. For comparison, I weigh a little less than 170 lbs."
