I would agree with the mechanics, that the ignitor is not at fault if the engine fires on cylinder 2 and 3. The ignitor is a simple proximity switch breaking when passeb by the timing marker on the crank shaft so its really just a dumb switch. I would look closer for a short.

Im not sure if you can burn out only a portion of the ignition module, I'm not familar enough with how they are wired, sorry.
